What ID Do You Need for a Statutory Declaration Video Call?

When getting a statutory declaration witnessed via video call, you must prove your identity to the solicitor before they can witness your signature. This is a legal requirement — without proper ID verification, the witnessing is not valid.

What ID is accepted?

You need one of the following:

• Passport (any nationality, current or recently expired within 5 years for some purposes — check with the solicitor)
• UK driving licence (full or provisional, photo card)

The ID must be a valid government-issued photo document. The solicitor needs to be able to clearly see your face and the document details during the video call.

What if my passport is expired?

A recently expired passport is sometimes acceptable for identity verification purposes during a witnessing appointment (as opposed to travel), but this depends on the solicitor's judgment. If you only have an expired passport, mention this when booking.

How does ID verification work during the video call?

Does my name need to match exactly?

The name on your ID should match the name on the declaration as closely as possible. If you are making a declaration about a change of name, or if your name has changed since your ID was issued, mention this when booking so the solicitor is aware.
