What ID Do You Need for a Statutory Declaration Video Call?

You need a passport or a driving licence with a photo. The solicitor must confirm who you are before witnessing your signature, and without that check the witnessing is not valid.

What ID is accepted?

• A passport of any nationality
• A UK photocard driving licence, full or provisional

The solicitor must be able to see your face and the details on the document clearly during the call.

What if my passport has expired?

A recently expired passport is sometimes acceptable for identity purposes at a witnessing appointment (as opposed to travel), but this is for the solicitor to decide. If your only passport has expired, say so when you book.

How is my ID checked on the call?

At the start of the call, the solicitor will ask you to hold your ID up to the camera. They will check:

• That the photo matches the person on the call
• That the document appears genuine
• That the name on the ID matches the name on the declaration

This takes a minute or two.

Does my name need to match exactly?

The name on your ID should match the name on the declaration as closely as possible. If the declaration is about a change of name, or your name has changed since the ID was issued, mention this when you book so the solicitor knows in advance.

How do I prepare for the call?

• Have your ID to hand before the call starts.
• Sit somewhere well lit so the solicitor can see your face and your ID clearly.
• Use a stable internet connection.
• Have the unsigned document ready. Do not sign it before the call.

What happens after I sign?

You sign the declaration live on the call, then email the signed copy to the solicitor. The solicitor countersigns it and emails it back to you, usually the same day. Nothing is posted. The fee is £100 per document.
